Remote-controlled Aquabotix HydroView takes underwater HD video, Mrs. Puff calls insurance agent

Using an iPad to control your music system? Been there, done that. Using an iPad to control a submersible that also records underwater video in 1080p? Oh, the possibilities. Aquabotix is giving Jacques Cousteau wannabes the ability to shoot the watery depths all the way down to 150 feet as its underwater doohickey -- the HydroView -- officially goes on sale. Measuring 14.6 x 19 x 7 inches and weighing nine pounds, the submersible comes with LED lights, a three-hour battery and a top-side box that connects with a cable tether. The box also allows users to communicate with the HydroView via an iPad, Mac or PC. Besides getting video proof of, say, which swimmers ate too many bean burritos for lunch, the submersible can also take pictures and gather data about water conditions. Top speed for the submersible is five knots -- one knot when going in reverse. Just make sure you don't channel your inner SpongeBob while remotely driving the thing. Although it's not in the same league as Rinspeed's submersible Elise, the HydroView still doesn't come cheap at $3,995 a pop. The Coca-Cola 600 is NASCAR's longest race. At 600 miles, Sunday night's marathon is closer to an endurance race, designed to test the limits of both car and driver.

The teams have done their part, delivering cars that should withstand the rigors of 600 miles, but what about the drivers? The Coke 600 is unlike anything they experience all season long, especially for first time competitor Danica Patrick.

Patrick endured seven Indianapolis 500s during her tenure in the IndyCar Series but predicts that the 600 will test her like no other race has.

"For me, it's just a matter of staying focused, staying positive, and staying hydrated," Patrick said.

While mental health will play a role in determining the outcome of Sunday's race, the Coca-Cola 600 requires a physical health and hygiene like no other race, a fact not lost on Patrick. Her season-long diet consists of egg whites, oatmeal and light sandwiches.

"During the race, I will have a drink mix that's a blend of carbs and protein," Patrick said. "I managed okay in the 500 at Darlington last week, but it's going to be a fair bit hotter. Hydration is going to be the most important element."

Temperatures are expected to reach 86 degrees tonight placing an added emphasis on personal fitness. This plays right into the hands of Carl Edwards and Mark Martin, two of the most physically fit drivers in the garage.

Edwards has been featured on the cover of Health and Fitness Magazine while Martin is competing in Sprint Cup at age 55, both due to their extreme workout regimens. Edwards has a specialized training routine in preparation, led by his personal trainer, Dean Golich, and they aren't telling.

"Dean's given me some specifics instructions," Edwards said. "It's going to be a hot, long, race and while I'm not going to tell you what I do, I am prepared for it.

"All of these races are tough and sometimes the ones you think are going to be tough aren't as bad. There are some days you just don't feel as good and some of my hardest races have been ones that I didn't think were going to be that hard."

Edwards did give away one secret - try not to eat in the middle of the 600.

"They used to have a little snack box in my car, but I don't do that anymore," Edwards said. "This race is one that maybe if you had something to eat in the middle of the race it would be good, but you've got to be careful about eating something when you're under that much stress and you've got the belts tight and everything. I've learned that you've got to be careful about what you eat during a race, even if it seems really simple, so I just don't eat."

Octopuses foil predators by stealing IDs

Instead of blending in with the background, octopuses hide from predators by taking on the shape and color of specific objects in their environment, new research suggests.

"Octopuses are considered to be the master of camouflage. An octopus can change its color, pattern and texture of its skin in an instant," study researcher Noam Josef of Ben-Gurion University in Israel told LiveScience.

"By reproducing key features of well-chosen objects, the octopus can produce an effective camouflage that may fool a wide range of potential predators," Josef and colleagues wrote online today Wednesday in the journal PLoS ONE.

There are a few different ways that animals use camouflage to hide. Some adopt the color or texture of their surroundings, taking in the environment as a whole like, say, a mouse that evolves to have a lighter color because it lives on the beach.

Other animals hide from predators by looking similar to nearby objects, mimicking just part of the environment, instead of the whole.

To see how octopuses do it, the researchers analyzed images of 11 octopuses of two species, O. cyanea and O. vulgaris, in their natural habitats of the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, respectively. A computer program was able to detect what parts of the environment were most similar to the color and texture of the octopus' skin in each of the images. In all pictures, the octopus only matched the texture of part of the environment ? say a coral reef ? the computer analysis showed.

Not only does the octopus have to fool all different types of visual systems, it also needs to be hidden from every angle, what the researchers call the "point of view" predicament: The predator could be a fish looking down on the octopus, or, if it's an eel, it would be at eye level.

"The octopus does not imitate the object precisely (in our case, it does not look exactly like any given branching coral), but rather uses key features of the objects common in its surroundings," the authors write in the paper. "A possible advantage to such a mechanism is that it can fit a wide range of locations even if the exact level of the match is not perfect."

The octopus is well-known for its shape-shifting abilities, and can change not only its shape, but also its color and texture to blend in. Interestingly, they can do this even though octopuses are essentially colorblind.

"All field observations support the fact that there is a great color-match between the octopuses and their surroundings," Josef wrote LiveScience in an email. "However, there are many physiological studies showing that these animals simply cannot see colors."

Organizers: Don't mess with the Olympic brand

LONDON (AP) ? One day, the small espresso shop near the site of the London Games was the "Olympic" cafe. The next day, it was the "Lympic."

So where did the "O'' go?

The manager won't say. But it's more than likely the small business became another casualty in the battle against guerrilla marketers ? advertisers who try to associate their products with a prestigious event without paying to be sponsors.

Protecting the Olympic brand is always a big job, and never more so than this year. Olympic organizers say the increasing sophistication of guerrilla marketers and the rise of social media are putting the five rings under assault in ways barely envisioned a decade ago.

That means action against anyone who infringes the Olympic brand or sponsors' deals ? no matter how small.

"There's no question that the rings are instantly recognizable ? it's what makes it attractive," said Stephen Greyser, an emeritus professor at Harvard Business School.

He compared the efforts by non-sponsors to athletes trying to find loopholes in the rules against performance-enhancing drugs.

"It becomes an industry," he said.

The International Olympic Committee and London organizers raised more than $2.4 billion from the sale of marketing rights in the four years through the 2008 games in Beijing, providing more than 44 percent of their funding during the period.

The rings are among the world's most recognized symbols. Companies like McDonald's, Coca-Cola and Samsung, which pay as much as $100 million each to be official sponsors during each Olympic cycle, expect organizers to protect their rights.

They expect organizers to protect their rights. If others can use the rings and the name "Olympic," why should the big companies pay so much money?

"Without our sponsors, the games simply wouldn't happen," London organizers said in a statement. "They provide funding, products, services and expertise to help us stage the games and with that have purchased exclusivity in their sector."

British lawmakers did their part, passing a law ? described as draconian by critics ? that gives organizers the power to bar companies from using Olympic trademarks and even certain combinations of words ? such as "London 2012" ? that may infringe on the rights of sponsors.

"Where there are serious or deliberate attempts to ambush the Games ... we will take swift and firm action," London organizers added.

But if the crackdown on guerrilla marketers goes too far, it could anger those attending the games or going about their business in London. Organizers will find it hard to tell people they can't wear their Nike T-shirt into Olympic Stadium because adidas is the sportswear partner.

"It's fine to clamp down on the threat, but where it impacts the individual, it's going to be very difficult for (London organizers) to get it right," said Hugh Tebay, a partner at Sipara, a British law firm that specializes in trademark and branding. "If public reaction is too strong, they'll have to backtrack."

Such worries played out during another big international event, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Bavaria brewing company outfitted some 30 Dutch women in mini-dresses in its eye-popping trademark orange for the Netherlands' opening game against Denmark. When the ringleaders were caught and authorities in Johannesburg threatened jail, Bavaria agreed to refrain from future marketing ambushes until 2022.

Four years earlier at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the brewery gave fans orange lederhosen. Guards confiscated the Alpine-inspired pants, forcing hundreds of fans to watch a match in their underwear.

Then there are the infamous cases, such as in 1992, when non-sponsor Nike held news conferences with members of the U.S. basketball team. Michael Jordan, who had an endorsement deal with Nike, accepted his gold medal while covering up the logo of the team's official sponsor, Reebok.

Some companies are already flying close to the sun in London.

The British company Virgin, whose interests include airlines, broadband service and holiday travel, has an ad featuring Jamaican gold medal winner Usain Bolt sporting a silver goatee identical to that of company founder Richard Branson. The campaign pushes Virgin's "super fast" broadband service, skirting the rights of BT, the games' official broadband provider.

Why do otherwise upstanding companies press to see just how far they can push the rules? It's because marketers lie awake at night hoping to link their brand to athletes overcoming all odds to win before a global audience.

The Summer Olympics are valuable because they occur so infrequently ? once every four years ? and the competition includes virtually every country on the planet. Although soccer's World Cup is similar in terms of national fervor, it goes on for longer, diluting its appeal, and it is less popular in that market of markets, the United States, Greyser said.

Unlike a typical sporting even that attracts mostly men, the Olympics draws in both men and women.

And then there's social media. While Olympic officials previously only had to worry about ads and billboards, now they must also police Facebook, Twitter and blogs. And not just by companies, but by fans and athletes.

Athletes have all sorts of personal endorsement deals, creating more headaches for Olympics organizers. During the games, athletes will be barred from tweeting about sponsors. If they prefer Pepsi to Coke, they had better not say so, at least not in their Twitter feed, according to IOC rules.

It's not clear what would really happen if an athlete as famous as Bolt were to violate those rules. Organizers say they will take a pragmatic approach and that most cases will be dealt with "in an amicable way."

Still, it's a little sad to go by 61 West Ham Lane and see the maroon sign with the "O'' rubbed out.

"We really did put the pressure on," said regulator Steve Miller, who heads a body to standardize local regulations. The group has since stepped away from the branding business.

Cafe workers say the "O'' vanished after they became tired of talking to reporters. But even Miller confessed to being somewhat startled, having wandered by one day to see it missing.

"I thought it had fallen off," he said.

How consumer-electronics makers are faring

A look at how selected makers of phones and other consumer-electronic gadgets are faring:

April 19: Microsoft Corp. says it shipped 1.4 million Xbox 360 consoles during the first three months of the year, about half of the 2.7 million shipped a year earlier.

Nokia Corp. says sales of smartphones dropped to 12 million in the first quarter, from 24 million a year earlier, while volume sales of cellphones fell to 83 million from 108 million a year earlier.

April 24: Apple Inc. says it sold 35 million iPhones in the quarter, almost twice as many as it sold a year ago and above analyst expectations. IPad sales came in below analyst expectations, at 11.8 million units. But that was still two and a half times as many as it sold in the same quarter a year ago. Mac sales were also slightly below expectations, at 4 million. That was 7 percent more than a year ago. Apple sold 7.7 million iPods, down 15 percent from a year earlier.

AT&T Inc. says it activated 4.3 million iPhones in the first quarter. That was down from 7.6 million in the fourth quarter, when AT&T began selling the iPhone 4S. However, the number was still up from the 3.6 million iPhones AT&T sold in the same quarter a year ago.

HTC Corp. reports a drop in first-quarter earnings and revenue as it faces competition from Apple and Samsung, but it expects revenue to rise in the current quarter with its "HTC One" series phone that offers users a better camera and music experience in addition to a sleek design. HTC says its biggest challenges had been the iPhone 4S's launch late last year. It expects to win back some of the U.S. market and expand its markets in Europe and Asia. HTC doesn't disclose the number of devices it sold, citing competitive reasons.

April 25: TomTom says it sold 1.4 million personal-navigation devices in North America, down from 2.1 million a year ago. In Europe, it sold 2 million, down from 2.4 million. TomTom says overall market share was relatively flat at 46 percent in Europe and 24 percent in North America.

April 26: Nintendo Co. says it sold 9.8 million Wii machines over the fiscal year that just ended, fewer than the 15 million it had sold the previous fiscal year, and below its initial hopes of selling 13 million machines. It remained optimistic for the fiscal year through March 2013, and forecast sales of 10.5 million Wii machines. The Wii U, which will have a touch-screen controller, comes out this year.

April 27: Samsung Electronics Co., maker of the Galaxy line of phones and tablet computers, doesn't disclose the number of smartphones it sells. It reports significant sales growth of high-end smartphones in developing markets including China, a key battlefield for mobile phone makers. It got more than 70 percent of its operating profit from mobile businesses in the first quarter.

CHICAGO -- Nan Wigmore brought her walker and packed her sign, ?Grateful Great Grandmas Circle The Wagons, Support Occupy,? and rode on a bus for some three days, sleeping in the same clothes, to make it to the NATO protests in Chicago.

The 75-year-old from Portland, Ore., says she couldn't imagine being anywhere else despite the discomfort of her journey.?

?My feelings are too deep to keep me in my old comfortable place, so I had to learn some new things and that means to move out of my comfort zone,? Wigmore said as she sipped a hot chocolate late Friday after a few hundred protesters met at a downtown Chicago plaza in the lead-up to the two-day summit that begins Sunday.

She was one of hundreds of demonstrators who got free bus rides from National Nurses United, a coalition of nurses unions that held a rally earlier Friday in Chicago calling for a transaction tax on Wall Street.?But Wigmore stands out from the crowd with her sign and walker.

A few protesters at the plaza greeted her and shared laughs amid the thunder of helicopters clattering overhead and people playing drums.?

After one man told her she was ?amazing? and a ?force to be reckoned with,? she later said: ?I?m a woman walking with a sign, period ? I?m following the heroics, the courage of generations back really, you know, we?re just continuing what was going on.?

Wigmore, who was an anti-nuclear activist, said she got involved in the Occupy movement as it picked up steam back home.

A great-grandmother to ?less than 15,? grandmother to 12 and mother of five, she said her youngest child called her ?hero? but there were others in her family who had differing points of view.

Pollution teams with thunderclouds to warm atmosphere

ScienceDaily (May 19, 2012) ? Pollution is warming the atmosphere through summer thunderstorm clouds, according to a computational study published May 10 in Geophysical Research Letters. How much the warming effect of these clouds offsets the cooling that other clouds provide is not yet clear. To find out, researchers need to incorporate this new-found warming into global climate models.

Pollution strengthens thunderstorm clouds, causing their anvil-shaped tops to spread out high in the atmosphere and capture heat -- especially at night, said lead author and climate researcher Jiwen Fan of the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

"Global climate models don't see this effect because thunderstorm clouds simulated in those models do not include enough detail," said Fan. "The large amount of heat trapped by the pollution-enhanced clouds could potentially impact regional circulation and modify weather systems."

Clouds are one of the most poorly understood components of Earth's climate system. Called deep convective clouds, thunderstorm clouds reflect a lot of the sun's energy back into space, trap heat that rises from the surface, and return evaporated water back to the surface as rain, making them an important part of the climate cycle.

To more realistically model clouds on a small scale, such as in this study, researchers use the physics of temperature, water, gases and aerosols -- tiny particles in the air such as pollution, salt or dust on which cloud droplets form.

In large-scale models that look at regions or the entire globe, researchers substitute a stand-in called a parameterization to account for deep convective clouds. The size of the grid in global models can be a hundred times bigger than an actual thunderhead, making a substitute necessary.

However, thunderheads are complicated, dynamic clouds. Coming up with an accurate parameterization is important but has been difficult due to their dynamic nature.

Inside a thunderstorm cloud, warm air rises in updrafts, pushing tiny aerosols from pollution or other particles upwards. Higher up, water vapor cools and condenses onto the aerosols to form droplets, building the cloud. At the same time, cold air falls, creating a convective cycle. Generally, the top of the cloud spreads out like an anvil.

Previous work showed that when it's not too windy, pollution leads to bigger clouds. This occurs because more pollution particles divide up the available water for droplets, leading to a higher number of smaller droplets that are too small to rain. Instead of raining, the small droplets ride the updrafts higher, where they freeze and absorb more water vapor. Collectively, these events lead to bigger, more vigorous convective clouds that live longer.

Now, researchers from PNNL, Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the University of Maryland took to high-performance computing to study the invigoration effect on a regional scale.

To find out which factors contribute the most to the invigoration, Fan and colleagues set up computer simulations for two different types of storm systems: warm summer thunderstorms in southeastern China and cool, windy frontal systems on the Great Plains of Oklahoma. The data used for the study was collected by different DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement facilities.

The simulations had a resolution that was high enough to allow the team to see the clouds develop. The researchers then varied conditions such as wind speed and air pollution.

Fan and colleagues found that for the warm summer thunderstorms, pollution led to stronger storms with larger anvils. Compared to the cloud anvils that developed in clean air, the larger anvils both warmed more -- by trapping more heat -- and cooled more -- by reflecting additional sunlight back to space. On average, however, the warming effect dominated.

The springtime frontal clouds did not have a similarly significant warming effect. Also, increasing the wind speed in the summer clouds dampened the invigoration by aerosols and led to less warming.

This is the first time researchers showed that pollution increased warming by enlarging thunderstorm clouds. The warming was surprisingly strong at the top of the atmosphere during the day when the storms occurred. The pollution-enhanced anvils also trapped more heat at night, leading to warmer nights.

"Those numbers for the warming are very big," said Fan, "but they are calculated only for the exact day when the thunderstorms occur. Over a longer time-scale such as a month or a season, the average amount of warming would be less because those clouds would not appear everyday."

Next, the researchers will look into these effects on longer time scales. They will also try to incorporate the invigoration effect in global climate models.

The research was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science. The data from China were gathered under a bilateral agreement with the China Ministry of Sciences and Technology.
