The Last Story Thread

The Last Epilogue

Many generations after Zael and his team had ended the war, the Island made from Fortress Island and Lazulis Island had prospered. However, there is always a threat to society, and it had shown its face generations after peace had settled in.

Early Inness work uncovered at Dallas art museum

(AP) ? An unsigned painting that has been in the Dallas Museum of Art's collection for more than eight decades and was long-believed to have been composed by another artist was likely created by George Inness, one of America's greatest landscape painters, a curator said.

Experts at the museum had thought the oil on canvas, "In the Woods," from around 1850, was painted by Asher B. Durand, a leading figure of the Hudson River School painters in the mid-19th century who was an early influence on Inness.

But experts at the museum began to question the painting's attribution, prompting American art curator Sue Canterbury to research the origin of the painting. As she considered artists who might stylistically fit, Canterbury turned to Michael Quick's book, "George Inness: A Catalogue Raisonne," where she noticed a pen and ink drawing by the artist that closely resembled "In the Woods."

"My heart leapt. I just couldn't believe it," Canterbury said.

The painting, which features a bucolic forest scene, went on display at the museum on Friday reattributed to Inness. Curators have renamed the painting, "Stream in the Mountains."

Canterbury said the reattribution of the painting is significant because it is from Inness' early years, a period of his long career from which not many works have survived. Inness died at the age of 69 in 1894. Canterbury said he changed his style many times during his career.

"It helps art historians understand what he was doing during this period," Canterbury said.

She said comparing the finished painting with the drawing helps "gives us an idea of his artistic process."

Quick, who called the discovery a significant addition to Inness' body of work, suggested the reason not as many paintings have survived from that early period in Inness' career is because he was not as well known then.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A weak showing in home sales and more disappointing earnings reports are sending stocks lower on Wall Street, extending a weeklong slide.

Stocks had started out higher early Thursday following a strong profit report from Procter & Gamble, but indexes started to weaken in late morning trading after a realtor group said that the pace of home purchase contracts was leveling off.

That turned the stocks of homebuilders sharply lower. PulteGroup was off 4 percent, giving up an early gain. D.R. Horton and Toll Brothers each fell 3 percent.

In midday trading Thursday the Dow Jones industrial average was off 26 points at 13,051. It had been up 87.

The Standard & Poor's 500 fell two points to 1,407 and the Nasdaq fell two points to 2,979.

The stock market has been in a slump for more than a week because of the weak revenue numbers and lower profit projections that have emerged from the latest round of corporate earnings reports.

The Dow gained 127 points Oct. 16 but since then has managed only two daily gains, both of them meager. The average has lost 474 points since that last significant increase.

Among companies reporting earnings Thursday, infant formula maker Mead Johnson Nutrition plunged $6.09 to $63.42 after its revenue came in well below what Wall Street analysts were expecting. The company also cut its forecast for full-year earnings.

Profits at United Airlines declined with fewer people flying, and the company fell well short of Wall Street expectations. The stock fell 77 cents to $19.50, a loss of 4 percent.

Homebuilders fell broadly after the pace of growth in pending home sales slowed last month. PulteGroup, which returned to profitability in the third quarter, gave up an early gain and was trading down 89 cents at $16.56. Toll fell $1.22 to $34.03 and D.R. Horton fell 69 cents to $20.72.

Procter & Gamble was the biggest gainer in the Dow after the consumer products company, whose products include Tide, Gillette and Charmin, reported earnings that beat analysts' expectations. P&G rose $2.55 to $70.63.

Online game maker Zynga jumped 26 cents to $2.39 after the company reported revenue that was stronger than analysts had anticipated. The company also said it would cut costs and enter the gambling business.

Health insurer Aetna rose 38 cents to $44.33 after reporting a 2 percent gain in third-quarter earnings. Higher revenue and lower-than-expected health care claims helped the company beat Wall Street's profit expectations.

Apple and Amazon.com report earnings after the market closes.

European and Asian markets were mixed. The price of crude oil edged down 3 cents to $85.70 per barrel in New York after a week of heavy selling.

As investors moved into stocks, they sold U.S. government bonds, sending yields higher. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note yielded 1.81 percent, up from 1.79 percent late Wednesday.

New York Jets v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow sat down for a one-on-one interview with Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, and one of the first things he mentioned was: ?We?ve had a history here of people talking too much. You just don?t want to do that.?

Mission accomplished.

Tebow largely danced around the notion of his frustration at not playing a bigger role, taking the good teammate role while admitting he?d prefer to do more.

?I don?t know if that?s not being a team guy,? Tebow said. ?I think that I try to be open and honest in talking to the media. Obviously try to be honest. But sometimes you don?t have to talk about everything. We?ve had a history here of people talking too much. You just don?t want to do that. Why make it something if it?s not??

Tebow?s squeaky clean image keeps him from appearing bitter and divisive, while clearly wishing he could do more.

?Obviously, I?m a competitor,? he said. ?And you get frustrated with losing. When we win, I?m excited about winning. That way I get the ups and downs of a football season. But I also know that it?s never as good as it seems, it?s never as bad as seems. You always have to stay focused because you never know for me.

?My role, it could expand. So you just got to always be ready.?

Asked if it was fair to starter Mark Sanchez to have such a popular player as the backup, Tebow replied: ?I feel like one of the reasons they brought me here was to help make him better by being someone that could come in and convert some first downs, make some plays, do different things. So, hopefully our being together will benefit both of us.?

Mehta joked with Tebow about running for public office, and he probably should. Because his ability to take potentially controversial topics and make them innocuous is as impressive as anything he?s done on the field as a Jet.

Decorating for Halloween : Ideas for Women Home and Family Blog

Most people are starting to do their Halloween decorating and coming up with ways to make your house look great can be difficult. You can run out and purchase all those decorations for your home or you can make a few. A really easy one is using milk jugs with spooky faces and tea light candles inside to turn your walkway into a spooky ghost path.

Another good idea (and a classic) is taking cardboard and cutting them into tombstone shapes. You simply spray paint and then stake down in the yard for a graveyard look. A sheet hanging from the tree makes an excellent ghost and many people hang stretched cotton to look like spider webs.

If you want things to look a little less spooky and more cute then you can carve a pumpkin or too and set them on the stoop. I have even seen a couple with personalized letters on them this year so far. One other classic is the bails of hay and corn out in the yard. It has been a standard for many years and if done correctly can look spooky or cute depending on your mood.

Jeddah shisha smokers forced out of the Saudi city's cafes

RIYADH (Reuters) - Smokers of the hubble-bubble water pipe have until Saturday to indulge their fondness for sweet flavoured tobacco in Jeddah's cafes as the Saudi city prepares to enforce a public ban on the habit.

A law against smoking the pipes, known in Arabic as shisha, in public places has been in place for years in some other Saudi cities, but it is only now being implemented in Jeddah, which is known as more socially liberal than the capital Riyadh.

"It's a big problem for our cafe. More than 80 percent of our customers come to smoke shisha. Now they complain as soon as they walk through the door when we say we won't have shisha," said Ghassan Mohammed Mansour, the manager of Jeddah's upscale Caffe Aroma in a phone interview.

English-language daily Saudi Gazette reported on Wednesday that more than 35 businessmen with investments in restaurants and cafes had complained to the city's chamber of commerce about the ban, demanding it protect their interests.

The pipes have been banned on health grounds, alongside other forms of smoking, with the Health Ministry campaigning for tougher measures against the habit for years.

Shisha smoking is popular in Saudi Arabia, but it is frowned upon by clerics of the austere Wahhabi school of Islam that dominates the world's top oil exporter.

In Nejd, the central part of Saudi Arabia where Riyadh is located and which is the heartland of Wahhabi belief, shisha smoking has long been banned in urban areas.

A grace period for cafes and restaurants that offer their customers shisha was announced in July by Interior Minister Prince Ahmed, but it ends on Saturday after which smokers will have to drive to the city limits to puff in public.

But cafe manager Mansour said the ban would be felt hardest by women, who would find it hard to frequent licensed shisha cafes outside the city limits in a country where only men are allowed to drive.

Businesses that flout the ban face increasingly hefty fines and ultimately closure if they are caught offering the pipes to customers.

"At this moment we have good menus and good food, so we will try to bring in new customers by advertising our food, but still we lose," Mansour said.

2 US scientists win Nobel chemistry prize

NEW YORK (AP) ? Two Americans won the Nobel Prize in chemistry Wednesday for studies of how the cells in our bodies pick up signals as diverse as hormones, smells, flavors and light ? work that is key to developing better medicines.

Those signals are received by specialized proteins on cell surfaces. Dr. Robert Lefkowitz and Dr. Brian Kobilka made groundbreaking discoveries about the inner workings of those proteins, mainly in the 1980s, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

The proteins are called G-protein-coupled receptors. Many of today's drugs ? maybe about half ? act on these receptors, including beta blockers and antihistamines. Experts say the prize-winning work and subsequent research is helping scientists as they try to improve current drugs and develop new ones.

The receptors pick up signals outside a cell and relay a message to the interior.

"They work as a gateway to the cell," Lefkowitz told a news conference in Stockholm by phone. "As a result, they are crucial ... to regulate almost every known physiological process with humans."

Lefkowitz, 69, is an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and professor at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

Kobilka, 57, worked for Lefkowitz at Duke before transferring to Stanford University School of Medicine in California, where he is now a professor.

Lefkowitz said he was fast asleep when the Nobel committee called, but he didn't hear the phone because he was wearing ear plugs. So his wife picked up.

"She said, 'There's a call here for you from Stockholm,'" Lefkowitz told The Associated Press. "I knew they ain't calling to find out what the weather is like in Durham today."

He said he didn't have any "inkling" that he was being considered for the Nobel Prize.

"Initially, I expected I'd have this huge burst of excitement. But I didn't. I was comfortably numb," Lefkowitz said.

Kobilka said he found out around 2:30 a.m., after the Nobel committee called his home twice. He said he didn't get to the phone the first time, but that when he picked up the second time, he spoke to five members of the committee.

"They passed the phone around and congratulated me," Kobilka told AP. "I guess they do that so you actually believe them. When one person calls you, it can be a joke. But when five people with convincing Swedish accents call you, then it isn't a joke."

He said he would put his half of the 8 million kronor ($1.2 million) award toward retirement or "pass it on to my kids."

The academy said it was long a mystery how cells interact with their environment and adapt to new situations, such as when they react to adrenaline by increasing blood pressure and making the heart beat faster.

Scientists suspected that cells had some type of receptor for hormones and other substances, but they couldn't find any.

Lefkowitz managed to reveal receptors, such as one for adrenaline, and started to understand how that one works.

Kobilka, working with Lefkowitz, found the gene that tells the body how to make the adrenaline receptor, and it soon became clear that there was a whole family of receptors that look alike ? a family that is now called G-protein-coupled receptors.

Since then, scientists have built up detailed knowledge about how those receptors work and how they are regulated. The two prize winners "have been at the forefront of this entire scientific journey," the Nobel committee said.

Kobilka moved on to Stanford after the gene discovery, and just last year he and his team there captured an image of a receptor at the moment it transferred the signal from a hormone to the interior of the cell. The academy called that "a molecular masterpiece."

Awarding the Nobel to Lefkowitz and Kobilka is "a fantastic decision," said Roger Sunahara, who studies how hormones activate the receptors at the University of Michigan. With detailed knowledge about the receptors, scientists can better understand how drugs work, which in turn helps them improve current medications and look for new ones, he said.

Drugs such as beta blockers, antihistamines and various psychiatric medicines have been around for some time, but before Lefkowitz and Kobilka's discoveries, their interaction with the human body wasn't fully understood, said Sven Lidin, chairman of the prize committee.

"All we knew was that they worked, but we didn't know why," Lidin said.

Mark Downs, chief executive of Britain's Society of Biology, said the critical role receptors play is now taken for granted.

"This groundbreaking work spanning genetics and biochemistry has laid the basis for much of our understanding of modern pharmacology as well as how cells in different parts of living organisms can react differently to external stimulation, such as light and smell, or the internal systems which control our bodies such as hormones," Downs said in a statement.

The U.S. has dominated the Nobel chemistry prize in recent years, with American scientists being included among the winners of 17 of the past 20 awards.

This year's Nobel announcements started Monday with the medicine prize going to John Gurdon of Britain and Japan's Shinya Yamanaka for their work on reprogramming cells. Frenchman Serge Haroche and American David Wineland won the physics prize Tuesday for work on quantum particles.

The Nobel Prizes were established in the will of 19th-century Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite. The awards are always handed out on Dec. 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death in 1896.

(AP) ? Chris Carpenter was every bit the postseason ace he's been in the past for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Taking the mound for only the fourth time in 2012, missing a rib after surgery to cure numbness on his right side, the 37-year-old Carpenter pitched scoreless ball into the sixth inning, rookie Pete Kozma delivered a three-run homer, and the defending champion Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 8-0 Wednesday to take a 2-1 lead in their NL division series.

All in all, quite a damper on the day for a Nationals Park-record 45,017 red-wearing, towel-twirling fans witnessing the first major league postseason game in the nation's capital in 79 years.

Three relievers finished the shutout for the Cardinals, who can end the best-of-five series in Thursday's Game 4 at Washington.

Kyle Lohse will start for St. Louis. Ross Detwiler pitches for Washington, which is sticking to its long-stated plan of keeping Stephen Strasburg on the sideline the rest of the way.

The Cardinals won 10 fewer games than the majors-best Nationals this season and finished second in the NL Central, nine games behind Cincinnati, sneaking into the postseason as the league's second wild-card under this year's new format. But the Cardinals become a different bunch in the high-pressure playoffs ? no matter that slugger Albert Pujols and manager Tony La Russa are no longer around.

Carpenter still is, even though even he didn't expect to be pitching this year when he encountered problems during spring training and needed an operation in July to correct a nerve problem. The top rib on his right side was removed, along with connecting muscles.

He returned Sept. 21, going 0-2 in three starts totaling 17 innings, so it wasn't clear how he'd fare Wednesday. Yeah, right. Carpenter allowed seven hits and walked two across his 5 2-3 innings to improve to 10-2 over his career in the postseason. That includes a 4-0 mark while helping another group of wild-card Cardinals take the title in the 2011 World Series, when he won Game 7 against Texas.

With the exception of Ian Desmond ? 3 for 4 on Wednesday, 7 for 12 in the series ? the Nationals' hitters are struggling mightily. They've scored a total of seven runs in the playoffs and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base in Game 3.

Rookie phenom Bryce Harper's woes, in particular, stand out: He went 0 for 5, dropping to 1 for 15.

Carpenter was pretty good with a bat in his hands, collecting a pair of hits, including a double off the wall that was about a foot or two away from being a homer. When he reached second base, he raised his right fist.

Similarly, neither club could be sure which Edwin Jackson would show up for NL East champion Washington, a year after he was part of the Cardinals' championship team: The one who struck out 10 and allowed one unearned run in eight innings against St. Louis on Aug. 30, or the one who lasted only 1 1-3 innings in a loss to the Cardinals on Sept. 28.

Much closer to the second version, it turned out, although he did recover from a rough start to retire eight of his last 10 batters Wednesday.

Still, Jackson was done after five innings and four runs. The Cardinals tacked on four runs off relievers Craig Stammen, Christian Garcia and Ryan Mattheus.

Not since the original Senators lost to the New York Giants in the 1933 World Series had big league baseball stretched past the regular season in Washington. Back then, of course, there was no MLB Network in HD to carry a game the way there was Wednesday; indeed, television itself was in its infancy, period. And spectators in attendance way back then could not enjoy a beer at the ballpark, because prohibition wasn't repealed until a couple of months later.

With the Capitol Dome rising beyond left field, the crowd of today was ready to root, root, root for the home team, breaking into chants of "Let's go, Nats!" after player introductions and again after a four-jet flyover. And, boy, did they boo ? when Cardinals outfielder John Jay was announced as the game's first batter, when catcher Yadier Molina trotted to chat with Carpenter, even when Carpenter paused between pitches to tie his red-and-gray right shoe.

Most of all, they booed when Washington's Danny Espinosa was ruled out at first after bunting in the second. TV replays showed that Espinosa did beat third baseman David Freese's throw, but the call was missed by Jim Joyce ? an umpire best known for blowing a call at first base to ruin Detroit pitcher Armando Galarraga's bid for a perfect game in 2010.

Earlier, those boos were directed at Jackson.

The Cardinals opened the second inning with four consecutive hits, the biggest being Kozma's first-pitch homer into the first row in left off a 94 mph fastball to make it 4-0. Kozma took over as the Cardinals' everyday shortstop in September, replacing injured All-Star Rafael Furcal, and only had 72 at-bats during the regular season.

But he's only the latest in a series of "Who's that?" stars of this postseason.

NOTES: Cardinals LF Matt Holliday fouled a ball off his left leg in the eighth, stayed in to deliver a two-run single, then left for a pinch runner. ... Frank Robinson, the first manager of the Washington Nationals, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Former Senators slugger Frank Howard will have that honor for Game 4. Robinson wore his old No. 20 ? and so did the player crouching at home to catch the throw, Nationals shortstop Desmond, who switched from No. 6 to 20 before this season as a tribute to Robinson. The Hall of Famer won the Triple Crown as a player with the Orioles in 1966 ?current Nationals manager Davey Johnson was a teammate ? and said Wednesday "there is no doubt" Detroit's Miguel Cabrera should be the AL MVP over Los Angeles' Mike Trout season after leading the league in average, homers and RBIs this season. ... Lohse got the win when the Cardinals beat the Braves in the wild-card game. ... Detwiler will be making the first postseason appearance of his career. His last regular-season start also came against the Cardinals, and he went only 2 1-3 innings, giving up seven runs. Asked what he takes away from that game, Detwiler replied: "I try not to remember that one." ... Wednesday was the 88th anniversary of Washington's only World Series championship, won by the Senators on Oct. 10, 1924.

Taliban gunmen in Pakistan shot and seriously wounded on Tuesday a 14-year-old schoolgirl who rose to fame for speaking out against the militants, authorities said.

Malala Yousufzai was shot in the head and neck when gunmen fired on her school bus in the Swat valley, northwest of the capital, Islamabad. Two other girls were also wounded, police said.

Yousufzai became famous for speaking out against the Pakistani Taliban at a time when even the government seemed to be appeasing the hardline Islamists.

The government agreed to a ceasefire with the Taliban in Swat in early 2009, effectively recognising insurgent control of the valley whose lakes and mountains had long been a tourist attraction.

The Taliban set up courts, executed residents and closed girls' schools, including the one that Yousufzai attended. A documentary team filmed her weeping as she explained her ambition to be a doctor.

"My friend came to me and said, 'for God's sake, answer me honestly, is our school going to be attacked by the Taliban?',"

Yousufzai, then 11, wrote in a blog published by the BBC.

"During the morning assembly we were told not to wear colourful clothes as the Taliban would object."

The army launched an offensive and retook control of Swat later that year, and Yousufzai later received the country's highest civilian award. She was also nominated for international awards for child activists.

Since then, she has received numerous threats. On Tuesday, gunmen arrived at her school and asked for her by name, witnesses told police. Yousufzai was shot when she came out of class and went to a bus.

Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said his group was behind the shooting.

"She was pro-West, she was speaking against Taliban and she was calling President Obama her ideal leader," Ehsan said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

"She was young but she was promoting Western culture in Pashtun areas," he said, referring the main ethnic group in northwest Pakistan and southern and eastern Afghanistan. Most members of the Taliban come from conservative Pashtun tribes.

Doctors were struggling to save Yousufzai, said Lal Noor, a doctor at the Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital in the Swat valley's main town of Mingora.

Fellow speaker,

To create double entendres (one word that has multiple meanings) that work in humor or comedy:

  1. Focus on one word you want to reform (change in different ways) (e.g., loan)
  2. Write out as many words that sound similar to that one word (e.g., lone, alone, groan, etc.)
  3. Select the words that have the best chance to be double entendres (e.g., groan, lone, alone
  4. Eliminate the words that sound negative (e.g., groan)
  5. Write out many play on words using these double entendres (change the spelling if needed) (e.g., never be alone with your loan)

British, Japanese scientists share Nobel Prize for stem cell work

Two scientists who upended fundamental beliefs about biology by demonstrating that every cell in the body has the potential to grow into every other type of cell have won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

Sir John Gurdon and Dr. Shinya Yamanaka were honored Monday for "the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed" to return to a very early state of development, the Nobel committee said in its citation.

Their research is still years away from yielding a clear breakthrough in medical treatment. But the work has upended the study of intractable conditions including heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer's by allowing scientists to grow disease-specific ? and even patient-specific ? cells for experimentation in the laboratory, experts said.

"It's nothing short of a revolution in how we think of a cell," said Dr. Deepak Srivastava, director of the Roddenberry Center for Stem Cell Biology and Medicine at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, where Yamanaka works one week each month.

Gurdon, 79, performed his seminal work at Oxford University in the late 1950s and early 1960s ? a good deal of it before Yamanaka was born.

Working with frogs, he showed in 1962 that replacing the nucleus of an egg cell with the nucleus from a cell taken from a tadpole's intestine allowed the egg to develop into a fully functional clone of that tadpole.

The discovery shocked his colleagues in the field. At the time, it wasn't clear whether different types of body cells had different DNA or shared the same genetic instructions and just read them differently, Srivastava said. Gurdon's experiments indicated that cells did contain the same genetic code and that individual cells were capable of creating an entire animal ? and thus any of its component parts ? if properly manipulated.

It would take 34 years for Scottish researcher Ian Wilmut to clone Dolly the sheep, replicating the feat in a mammal and capturing the public's imagination.

Yamanaka's achievement was to give scientists an idea of how that cellular reprogramming gets done. When he began this line of work, he was highly criticized in Japan for undertaking such a difficult project.

The Japanese scientist ? who trained as an orthopedic surgeon before becoming a full-time researcher ? figured out that activating simple combinations of genes in a mouse skin cell could rewind that cell to an embryo-like state, allowing it to develop anew as any other type of cell in the body.

Dr. Owen Witte, director of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA, was in the audience when Yamanaka presented his research to a meeting of biologists in Toronto in 2006. He said there was a gasp in the room when Yamanaka unveiled his breakthrough.

"Everyone knew we were hearing something that would change the history of science," Witte said. "We knew he would win the Nobel Prize."

Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, said that he too "got chills up and down my spine" when he read Yamanaka's paper describing his work, which was published a few months later in the journal Cell.

Until then, it was assumed that cell development was a one-way street. There was no way to "read that paper and not decide that the world was really changed," Collins said.

The cells Yamanaka created in mice ? and, a year later, in humans ? are known as induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells.

Researchers around the world are now using Yamanaka's technique to transform cells from patients with a variety of ailments into iPS cells and then studying them to understand the mechanics of disease at a cellular level. Scientists are also using the "disease in a dish" model to test new drugs.

"If someone has Alzheimer's, we can't take a biopsy of the brain," Srivastava said. "But we can take a skin cell, turn it into an iPS cell, and study that."

Soon, he added, work with iPS cells may allow physicians to deliver on the promise of personalized medicine. Studies of patient cells could help doctors develop targeted drug treatments and determine what therapy is most appropriate in a specific case.

Further on the horizon, scientists hope to use the technology to regenerate replacement cells for patients, such as insulin-producing cells for those with Type 1 diabetes or neurons for those who have suffered spinal cord injuries. Another goal is to treat diseased tissues directly by reprogramming cells into a healthy state.

Next year, a Japanese team will test the first iPS-based treatment for people to reverse an eye condition called macular degeneration, Yamanaka said during a news conference Monday. A trial of a cell-based treatment for macular degeneration using the more-controversial embryonic stem cells is already underway at UCLA and some other sites.

Rio's mayoral race: A new 'Al Gore' for Brazil?

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes swept yesterday's municipal election. But some say his opponent could play a watchdog role as Rio prepares for the World Cup and Olympics.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes swept yesterday's municipal election in Rio, winning with nearly 65 percent of the vote. In second place was Rio state assemblyman Marcelo Freixo, who won 28 percent of the vote. For those familiar with Rio politics, it wasn't a surprise: Mayor Paes is a popular incumbent who raised much more money than Mr. Freixo (around 14 times more), had a huge coalition (Freixo refused to create one), enjoyed much more TV advertising time than Freixo, and has support from the state governor, President Dilma Rousseff, and former president Lula.

Amid a construction boom with new government-funded hospitals and education centers, Paes also counts among his administration's accomplishments presiding over the preparations for the World Cup and Olympics. In addition, Paes won despite recent accusations of corruption ? allegedly paying off another political party not to run for the mayoralty of Rio. Freixo also was at a disadvantage due to popular appeal; Paes is a seasoned politician, whereas Freixo ? who comes from a background of academia and activism ? is less accustomed to smooth-talking.

RELATED: How much do you know about Latin America? Take our geography quiz!

Supporters of Freixo backed him, among other reasons, to support his?stand against corruption in politics, as well as his famous opposition?to militias and organized crime as depicted in Tropa de Elite 2. He's been critical of the mega-event preparations, saying during the most recent mayoral candidate debate: "We want the Olympics. But a city that's good for the Olympics must be good for the people who live in it."

He also stood up to Paes on the campaign trail, and is not one to mince his words. Supporters saw him as a change from the usual suspects in Rio government. Given all that he was up against, it's? impressive that he received nearly a third of the vote. It's also important to note that his party, the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL), doubled the number of seats in the city legislature from 2 to 4.

So what does this mean for Rio?

From my perspective, it means Freixo is well-positioned to play the role that fits him best, given the circumstances: that of a watchdog, a critical voice who will try to ensure transparency during the next Paes administration, and the upcoming mega-events. As an activist who has worked hard to combat militias, there's still lots of work to do there. And given Rio's recent history with the PanAm Games and concerns about white elephants already emerging in the run-up to the World Cup, there's a long road ahead for the city. He's exactly the right person to spearhead efforts to see that the local government does what's best for its residents and not FIFA or the IOC. He's also the right person to work to oversee the city's preparations for the mega-events to prevent corruption and overspending.

Maybe he'll be something of an Al Gore for Rio.

Rio politics may not have changed dramatically yet. But with someone like Marcelo Freixo working outside of the P?lacio da Cidade, there's a chance that there will be more accountability and a push for more transparency, as well as a continued fight against organized crime.

Don't Blow Up With Stress! | Gnet Health and Fitness

Stress ? a factor increasingly invading our daily lives, particularly in the modern world where the fast pace and multiple pressures of life go hand in hand with this unwanted aggravation. Whether attributed to relationships, job pressures, or money worries and such like, stress can be a killer.

What you may not realise, however, is that it could also be behind your weight gain ? studies revealing that the two are in fact linked! Basically, chronic stress increases production of stress hormones which tell your brain to eat something pleasurable (normally sugary or fatty), whilst also reducing fat cell burning capacity, promoting weight gain!

Control Your Angst ? And Your Weight!

Whilst we can always try to master the art of relaxation and minimise stress, one of the certainties of life is that everything doesn?t always go to plan! We are often faced with issues and challenges, some of which will inevitably cause stress ? and the accompanying craving for comfort foods that can add kilos ? something else to stress about!

?ReloraMax? is a natural dietary supplement that apparently provides both stress relief and weight control, claiming to:

  1. Reduce stress.
  2. Ease anxiety.
  3. Help with weight loss.
  4. Reduce negative feelings.
  5. Curb stress-related eating.
  6. Use all-natural ingredients.

Relax With Relora?

ReloraMax reportedly uses a safe all-natural formula that works to reduce stress levels and control stress-related eating (helping to prevent the associated weight gain) ? without the sedation effect of other supplements. It also apparently regulates hormone levels linked to stress-induced eating and weight gain.

The main ingredient: Relora ? made from a blend of Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract in combination with extract of Phellodendron Amurense Bark. Relora is believed to help control stress-related symptoms, such as restlessness, poor sleep, concentration difficulties, tension, irritability, and emotional ups and downs.

A clinical trial conducted on overweight women prone to over-indulging when stressed revealed no significant weight gain and some weight loss, as well as a notable reduction in anxiety scores. It also demonstrated that Relora reduced stress-related snacking on unhealthy foods by 76% in those who admitted to stress-induced comfort-eating. The normalization of stress hormone levels is what appears to help subjects maintain body weight.

Testimonials?

Those who have tried ReloraMax certainly attest to the product?s abilities, with favourable reviews easy to come by, including all three featured on Amazon and listed below:

Take one capsule in the morning and one capsule in the evening. You should take the supplement with food, though not other stimulants such as caffeine.

Stay Tranquil, Stay Trim!

If stress is getting the better of you, making you reach for crisps, cakes, cookies and other tasty yet unhealthy treats for temporary relief, then you might want to take care, as it could also provoke unwanted weight gain ? guaranteed to make you feel even worse! A far better idea would be to try a safe herbal supplement proven to work well for others prone to the effects of stress, it may be just the thing to help you relax and feel more in control of your emotions ? and your waistline!

Recession-Fuelled Remodeling Trends

A major aspect of the recession-laden economy is the sluggish housing market. That factor has meant a boom for home remodels, since many homeowners realize that doing so can be more economical than trading up. In addition to an increase in renovations in general, certain types of additions or changes reflect our difficult economic times.

Additions of In-Law Quarters

While these attached apartments have traditionally been referred to as mother-in-law quarters, they?re being inhabited by extended family of all types.

Some families are building these to make room for aging Baby Boomers who can?t quite make it completely independently and yet can?t or don?t want to swallow the high monthly cost associated with retirement communities or nursing homes. Younger Boomers are increasingly opening their homes to their jobless or underemployed adult children, many of whom have partners and/or children of their own.

The rising normalcy of such additions is helping them to be seen as assets, rather than detractors, when it comes to resale values. At a time when many Americans have extended family members living with them, and others realize that such a need may arise, these separate living spaces offer privacy and boundaries that can help keep family ties from snapping under the pressure of too much closeness.

In-law quarters can consist of only a bed-and-bath suite, but they ideally include a kitchen and living area, as well. While unattached in-law quarters offer more privacy, retrofitting unfinished space within your home can mean a lower-cost home renovation that will meet your family?s needs now and increase your home?s selling potential when you?re ready for that step.

Increased Storage & Everyday Efficiency

Today?s homeowners are a bit more frugal and utilitarian than those of yesteryear. Instead of hosting formal dinner parties, they?re having friends over for a backyard barbeque. Instead of grocery shopping for the week at high-priced specialty stores, they?re buying in bulk from warehouse outlets. What does this mean for home design? A lot, actually.
While the gourmet outdoor kitchen may not be financially realistic, today?s families are traveling less and staying home, more. That often means having outdoor living space available.

In the mean time, that formal dining room has got to go. ?It?s wasted space,? say many homeowners. An increasing number of people are taking down that wall between the kitchen and dining room for an open-concept eat-in kitchen that?s easier to clean. The added space can allow for a larger pantry that has room for all those bulk purchases, and a computer station from which recipes can be viewed is a nice perk, as well. For homes that already have spacious eat-in kitchens, dining rooms are morphing into mud rooms or laundry areas, showing how practical day-to-day family life is prioritized above the occasional holiday meal.

Are you considering a remodel, in the midst of the recession? If so, you?ll want to consider these trends that are likely to continue and add value to your home.
