Flint's Follies: Dealing with death and life.

The last 24 hours has been hard to deal with at times.

We got a call last night that one of my Uncle's, B, was rushed into surgery. He has diabetes and suffered a heart attack earlier this year and nearly died. Luckily, he recovered from it for the most part. One of his feet got infected a few months ago and never recovered. The infection was so bad that last night they had to amputate his left leg below the knee. He got through the surgery but we haven't heard any word on his?recovery yet.

This afternoon, at work, I found out that a co-worker, O, died. He was Japanese-Canadian and a fairly quiet man. we would talk sometimes and once we started he always had a hello and a smile when we met. A few times we talked about life in Asia. We had some similar likes and dislikes. Work is going to be a darker place without him.

I had to deal with things like that when I lived in Korea. Family and friends dying or being hurt and nothing I could do. It was hard but being home, and not being able to do anything, is harder. O's dying has hit me hard. My Uncle's current condition probably made it harder than it would have.

Such is life. The bad times make you treasure the good.

NASA?s Curiosity Rover Gets Moving on Mars

It was a modest test drive: moving forward 15 feet, turning in place 120 degrees, then backing up about 8 feet. The entire trip took about 16 minutes, with most of the time spent stopped as cameras took photographs of the progress.

But for the team behind Curiosity, the six-wheeled NASA rover that landed on Mars 17 days ago, the first tracks in the dust on Wednesday were an exciting milestone.

?It couldn?t be more important,? Peter C. Theisinger, the mission?s project manager, said at a post-drive news conference. ?I mean, we built a rover. So unless the rover roves, we really haven?t accomplished anything.?

Curiosity is to spend at least a couple of years roving through a 96-mile-wide crater and up a 3.4-mile-high mountain at the center of the crater, exploring for signs that early Mars could have been habitable for microbial life.

But that journey of miles started with a roll of a few feet away from Bradbury Landing, where Curiosity set down on Aug. 6. NASA said on Wednesday that the spot had been named for Ray Bradbury, the author of ?The Martian Chronicles? and other influential science-fiction novels, who died in June. He would have turned 92 on Wednesday.

Recently, Curiosity has been busy with other exercises, like vaporizing Martian rocks and seeing what they are made of (basalt, apparently, or something similar). On Sunday, the rover fired a laser instrument for the first time, hitting a rock with 30 bursts in 10 seconds and analyzing the atomic makeup from the resulting flashes of light.

On Monday, it flexed its arm. On Tuesday, it wiggled its four corner wheels in preparation for the drive.

?Everything has been going extremely well,? Mr. Theisinger said. ?Really extremely well.?

Having succeeded at rock-zapping on Sunday, scientists turned the laser, which was developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, to vaporize small bits at six more locations. So far, most of the rocks appear to be a type, common on Mars, that forms from the rapid cooling of lava.

Another instrument, provided by Russia, has started firing neutrons into the soil to look for hydrogen, which would point to the presence of water. The rover has also gradually started science observations.

So far, the only broken piece has been a wind sensor that may have been knocked out by rocks kicked up during the landing, NASA said. A second wind sensor is working properly, as is the rest of the rover?s weather station, which was contributed by Spain.

The station has measured swings in air temperature from minus-103 degrees to 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Swings in ground temperatures have been even greater, from minus-132 degrees to 37 degrees.

During the next week, as more instruments are checked out, Curiosity may conduct its first analysis of the makeup of the Martian atmosphere. When that is complete, it is to head to its first destination, called Glenelg, where three types of terrain appear to intersect.

At first, Curiosity will move only about 30 feet at a time. As its engineers gain experience, the drives will stretch to longer than the length of a football field, relying on the rover?s ability to navigate for itself.

Mr. Theisinger, the project manager, cautioned that the early successes did not ensure future ones; so far, the mission has checked off only two of its primary goals, to launch on time and to land on Mars.

?We?ve got a long way to go before this mission meets its full potential,? he said. ?But the fact we haven?t had any early problem is, in fact, fantastic.?

Questions you Should Ask your Accountant About your Tax Return ...

?

Your accountant may be helping you with financial planning and forecasts, loan applications, investment advice, audits and many other things. However, do you know all you need to know about your?taxes? Most accountants know a lot about the complicated?tax?system, but may not know everything there is to know. Here are three questions you should ask your accountant about your?taxes.

1. Does your accountant have an arrangement with a third party?tax?support service?

Even though accountants know a lot about?taxes, they cannot be experts in all aspects and will need to consult?tax?specialists sometimes. Your accountant should know when they are out of their depth and need an expert opinion.

Your accountant may try to do some research to find answers or they may contact a larger accounting firm that has dedicated support for smaller accountants. They may also call help lines where organisations provide support for accountants and?tax?advisers.

2. Does your accountant know all of the?tax?savings your business could be making?

People ask this question all the time, but it is good to be a little more specific.

  • Ask your accountant if you are claiming everything you possibly can including use of home for work, mileage, your telephone and subsistence.
  • Are there any VAT schemes for smaller businesses that would help reduce your?taxes?such as using cash accounting or a flat rate scheme?
  • Would it be a good idea to set up a company for your business to get more?tax?benefits?
  • Are you paying yourself or your employees in the most?tax?efficient way? You may be giving dividends, drawings or wages.

3. Are your accountant?s?tax-reducing strategies legal?

It is legitimate to minimise your?tax?liabilities and claim all available allowances and reliefs.?Tax?relief can be claimed for expenditure that has been incurred exclusively and wholly for business purposes. Your accountant can plan your business affairs to keep your?tax?liabilities as low as possible as long as it is within the law.

What your accountant should not be doing is deliberately or dishonestly allowing you to evade paying?tax. They should not claim?tax?relief for expenses that have not been incurred and for expenses that do not relate to your business. They should also not exclude any of your taxable income from your accounts or?tax?returns.

There are severe consequences to illegal?tax?returns?for you and your accountant. There will be revenue investigations and possible huge backtaxes?to pay. There will also be interest on the back?taxes. Penalties may be up to 100 per cent of the?taxes?owed. This is all a huge waste of time and money and isn?t the worst. If your accountant has done all of the above, you could be prosecuted and sent to prison.

It is tempting to let a professional accountant take care of the?taxes, but to protect your business and yourself as well as to pay the least amount of?tax?that you legally can, it is wise to ask your account a few questions.

Dale is a Business and Finance Writer from Sydney, Australia. He writes for many leading business and finance news sites and believes these questions are important for getting the most out of your accountant and tax return. Dale is currently writing his second book on Accounting Practices.

'The Office' will end its run on NBC next season

NEW YORK (AP) ? "The Office" will be closing next year.

Producer Greg Daniels says the NBC comedy will conclude business at Dunder Mifflin after the upcoming ninth season.

He said Tuesday that the final year will be exciting and memorable and will take creative chances. And it will reveal who's been making the mock documentary that has provided the show with its format.

Daniels says, "I think endings can be very powerful."

Will former regional manager Michael Scott return as a guest? Daniels says he hopes Steve Carell will reprise his role as the socially inept boss, but he isn't counting on it. Carell left in 2011.

"The Office" was adapted from its British predecessor and premiered on NBC in March 2005.

While its ratings have slipped, it's still NBC's highest-rated scripted series.

No Gnawing! New Rat Without Molars Discovered

A newly discovered rat in the Philippines doesn't have any molars, making it the only known rodent in the world without back teeth.

The long-snouted fuzzball has been dubbed Paucidentomys vermidax. "Paucidentomys" translates roughly to "few-toothed mouse," while "vermidax" means "worm devourer" ? a reference to the new species' diet.

"When we caught the animal, we were in the forest, and we knew right away that it was something different," said Jacob Esselstyn, a postdoctoral researcher in biology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. "But we couldn't see inside of its mouth, so had no idea of the unusual lack of teeth."

Esselstyn and his colleagues caught two specimens of the rat in pitfall traps on Sulawesi Island in the Philippines. These traps are essentially buried buckets, with tops level to the ground so that any small mammal running across the forest floor will fall in.

The rats live in wet, mossy forests at high elevation, Esselstyn told LiveScience. It's not yet clear how common they are, though they do seem difficult to trap. One of the rats had a stomach full of worm segments and nothing else, suggesting that the rodents eat mostly or only earthworms. [See Photos of the New Rat]

What makes Paucidentomys vermidax unique among rodents is its teeth. Every other rodent species ever discovered has molars for grinding food, Esselstyn said. P. vermidax has none. The rat also has unusual incisors at the front of its mouth. Instead of being wedge-shaped for gnawing like most rodent incisors, this rat's teeth are double-pointed bicuspids.

These odd teeth "may be used to cut or to tear earthworms into segments, but we don't really know how that works," Esselstyn said.

The likely closest relative of the new rat does have molars, Esselstyn said, suggesting that this rat lost its back teeth at some point during its evolutionary history. The ability to grind and gnaw has helped rodents become one of the most successful groups of mammals on the planet, Esselstyn said, adding that it's interesting this particular species has reversed that trait.

"It's just a good illustration of how much biodiversity is out there that we're not yet aware of," he said.

The researchers announced the find today (Aug. 21) in the journal Biology Letters.

The Broken Promises Coalition Speaks About Recent Papal ...

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) August 21, 2012

On August 21, 2012, The Broken Promises Coalition issued a statement following the release of a papal message from the Catholic Church advising married couples to strengthen their marriage. As a coalition dedicated to the belief that marriage is a lifelong commitment deserving enduring bridal jewelry, Broken Promises endorses an emphasis on the importance of relationship maintenance for a happy marriage.

According to a papal message reported by Catholic News Services, Going to Mass together and setting aside time each day to talk to each other are two simple practices that can help Catholic couples strengthen their marriage and be examples to others, The Pope, Benedict XVI, and the church ?invites Christian couples to be ?the gentle and smiling face of the church,? the best and most convincing heralds of love sustained and nourished by faith,? said the message to attendees at the international meeting of Teams of Our Lady.

Broken Promises representative, Clay Darrohn, states, Broken Promises believes that wedding vows represent a lifelong commitment for couples. Broken Promises supports the Catholic Churchs decision to promote healthy marriages built on communication and time spent together. Similarly, we urge the bridal jewelry industry, specifically retailers and manufacturers of tungsten carbide, to promote the lifelong commitment of marriage by holding their products to a higher standard.

Darrohn continues stating, Tungsten carbide wedding rings are wrongfully advertised as being indestructible, when in fact they can break when struck after fatigue from daily wear. This is why the coalition invites anyone who believes in marriage, vows, and love to sign their petition to demand honesty from jewelry retailers.

Broken Promises was founded in April of 2012 and is a group of consumers dedicated to spreading information about the brittle nature of tungsten rings to brides and grooms to-be.

(AP) ? Even Pittsburgh third baseman Pedro Alvarez was starting to lose focus in the later stages of the Pirates' 6-3, 19-inning win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

"I was getting a little stagnant out there," he said. "It's one of those things where it's mind over matter. You've just got to fight and keep that desire going."

Alvarez played a big role in ending the marathon with his 23rd homer of the season. The drive broke a 3-3 tie as the Pirates won the longest game in the majors this season.

It took 6 hours, 7 minutes to finish, trying the longest contest by time, matching a game between Baltimore and Boston on May 6.

Both teams scored a run in the 17th, and each club used eight pitchers.

Alvarez slammed the go-ahead homer off Barret Browning (1-3). Andrew McCutchen added a two-run single later in the inning.

Wandy Rodriguez (8-12), who was set to start for the Pirates on Monday night at San Diego, got the win with two scoreless innings of relief. It was his first win as a reliever in 232 major league appearances.

"That was a backyard tug-of-war," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. "We kept playing defense, we kept pitching. At the end of the day, we finally got some separation in the 19th inning.

About 9,000 fans from the original crowd of 43,412 stayed until the end.

Each team had played a marathon in recent years. St. Louis went 20 innings against the Mets on April 17, 2010, and Pittsburgh played 19 innings at Atlanta on July 26, 2011.

The Pirates improved to 4-0 in extra innings this season. They moved two games ahead of St. Louis in the race for the last wild card spot in the NL. The Cardinals have lost three of four overall.

"It was a battle all around on both sides," McCutchen said. "They came to play and we were just able to get the win.

It feels good."

Alvarez picked on a slider from Browning and drove it 408 feet.

"It felt good out of my hand," Browning said. "It just stayed up. It don't think I've ever been this disappointed. I just didn't do my job."

Both teams ran out of position players after the 18th inning.

Garrett Jones gave Pittsburgh a short-lived 3-2 lead with a bases-loaded infield single in the 17th. He drove in pitcher James McDonald, who singled as a pinch-hitter, the first of his career.

"It was just luck," McDonald said. "You know how hard pinch hitting is? So it was pretty much luck."

But St. Louis came right back to tie it on a sacrifice fly by Tony Cruz that brought in pinch-runner Ryan Jackson. Yadier Molina and Skip Schumaker began the 17th inning with singles.

St. Louis left-hander Jaime Garcia, sidelined for 64 days with a strain in his pitching shoulder, struck out a career-high 10 and did not allow an earned run in an eight-inning, 107-pitch stint. He gave up five hits, two unearned runs and did not walk a batter.

Pittsburgh had a pair of hits in the 16th but Molina threw out Jose Tabata trying to steal and reliever Joe Kelly induced McCutchen to ground out to end the inning.

Reliever Edward Mujica got Neil Walker to ground into a double play to end the 11th. Kelly allowed four hits and one run in 5 2-3 innings of his first relief appearance.

Carlos Beltran put St. Louis in front with a two-run double in the fourth, and also stole three bases, tying a career high. Beltran leads the NL with 85 RBIs.

"Twenty innings or nine innings, a loss is a loss," Beltran said. "We had the opportunities. It just didn't happen."

Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens gave up two runs and two hits over seven innings. He struck four and walked one.

The Pirates scored twice in the sixth to tie it on a pair of infield singles and Garcia's throwing error. Clint Barmes reached on an infield hit and Garcia mishandled a bunt attempt by Karstens. Josh Harrison drove in Barmes with a sacrifice fly and McCutchen followed with an infield single.

Chris Resop led the Pirates' bullpen effort with three scoreless innings. Kevin Correia and Jared Hughes added two scoreless innings each.

Hurdle said he has yet to select a starting pitcher to replace Rodriguez on Monday.

"I'll come up with something tomorrow," he said.

Global leader in measuring the digital ecosystem, comScore, today released the findings from its study on the online activities in India. And social media has come up all trumps.

Based on an analysis of more than 61 million users who spend an average of 13 hours (772.5 minutes to be precise) per month online, the study found that Google sites were the most preferred by Indian Internet users ? reaching out to 57.8 million visitors (94.8% reach).

With more than 50 million visitors, Facebook accounted for 83.4% of the total reach. An average Facebook user spent nearly 4 hours on the website in June as compared to 2.5 hours on Google properties, with YouTube accounting for most of it.

Will Rep. Todd Akin drop out of Senate race?

Rumors were flying Monday afternoon that Rep. Todd Akin would resign his candidacy after causing a firestorm of controversy with his "legitimate rape" comments on Sunday. A senior Republican official told Buzzfeed's Ben Smith that Akin is planning to withdraw his Senate candidacy at 5:00 pm tomorrow. The source said Akin may still change his mind, however, and Smith cites another source who throws cold water on the speculation. Meanwhile, conservative blogger Erick Erickson and former Mitt Romney foreign policy adviser Richard Grenell both wrote on Twitter that Akin would resign.

Somebody better tell the candidate, however. Akin wrote on Twitter while the rumors were flying that he is "in this race to win," and called on supporters to donate to his embattled campaign. He told Sean Hannity Monday afternoon that "we're going to stay in."

Scores of Republican politicians have condemned Akin for saying on Sunday that victims of "legitimate rape" do not need access to legal abortions because they cannot biologically become pregnant. Akin apologized for the statement on Monday but said he wouldn't drop out. "I'm not a quitter," Akin said on Mike Huckabee's radio show. Nonetheless, pressure has been mounting for his withdrawal. Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who runs the Senate Republicans' campaign arm, said in a statement that Akin should carefully consider his candidacy over the next 24 hours, a sentiment echoed by Mitt Romney. An unnamed official told the AP that the NRSC would not spend the $5 million it had set aside for the Missouri race on Akin.

The Republican party can nominate a candidate to replace Akin if he drops out on or before Tuesday. After that date, Akin needs a court order to drop out. The six-term Congressman was by no means the favorite even before his gaffe. His rival, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, spent $2 million during the Republican?primary boosting Akin as the "true conservative" because the campaign considered him the weakest potential challenger.

This story has been updated to include additional reporting.

Lots of the contractors make it happen thing for the reason that old cabinets may not fit the decoration of new kitchen that you choose to build. Beneath are disposed of in the dumpster. Actually there's nothing an outstanding decision when you can reuse the cupboards.

Essentially the most obvious systems large amounts of people choose is the wall storage system. What this system is essentially made from is hooks and brackets in addition to hangers in order that you have the ability better use a space in the garage. It's possible to make a wide variety of different shelves in the storage system. It's also possible to discover that you can closure song on your garage basic systems and build who you are a mini closet. Once you spend time to think about these closets you will soon discover that you have formulated storage for every type of things. Remember hundreds of old clothes? Why not consider that garden equipment? Well now you may have room.

The primary stage in reclaiming garage space is almost always to organize a 'cull'. Consequently ruthlessly focusing on precisely what is stored there and deciding what precisely may go. Products which are surplus to requirement is often donated to charity, sold together with a yard sale or in love with online auction sites like eBay. Often there can be items in garages that can be inconvenient to maneuver. If that is the case, charities are going to arrange pick-up and anything sold online will surely have that proviso attached.

The third option available is installing a posh and intricate Garage Storage Cabinet. This will likely your website selection of cabinets, drawers, shelves plus specially engineered nooks and hooks to keep items that include sports gear, and also other paraphernalia. This may be a perfect choice for homeowners with plenty of storage. Installing a process of your kind is costly however and is not suitable for triggered renting or temporarily basically a place.

This is what he did to improved the gap:1. First, he wrote down his goal for ones room, after which it he plan how he were going to ensure it is look the best way he thought to.2. Second, he build a yard sale to sell anyone unwanted items his family didn't use or needed anymore. This help him disentangle a big part of one's room.3. He got diamond plate garage cabinets to install good storage areas on the walls, top and bottom. Plus, in addition, they look nice and clean.

Wood cabinets for garages are typically laminated particalboard or plywood. These vary greatly in quality and durability. Consider adjustable shelves and multiple hinges, and hinges that allow door pay off the opening. There's also real wood cabinets of an quality and value just like optimum cabinets. They usually are specialized to order.

How To Structure A Marketplace

Screen Shot 2012-08-19 at 11.31.40 AMEditor's Note: The following is a guest post by Simon Rothman of Greylock Partners. Rothman is particularly passionate about Marketplace technology (Etsy, Kickstarter, Airbnb, etc) and how to garner success in that category. Marketplaces are endemic to the consumer web: Largely popularized by eBay, we've recently seen quite a few variations on the theme, like young guns Etsy, oDesk, Airbnb, and Kickstarter. Old or new, the two elements that bind all marketplaces are network effects (a good thing) and the chicken-and-egg problem (not such a good thing).

?CA-KNF Fort Complex Fire. 4,548 acres. 38%.?

?

Summary:?A lightning storm that moved through the Northern California and Southern Oregon area on August 5th, 2012, started mutiple fires on the Klamath National Forest and the Rogue River National Forest. Firefighters from both forests quickly contained many of the fires over several days. However three of the fires that were in steep and rugged terrain continued to grow. The Hello Fire in the Red Buttes Wilderness and the Lick Fire burning about five miles east of the Red Buttes Wilderness are in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. Together with the Goff Fire, which is on the Klamath National Forest, the three fires are now managed as the newly named Fort Complex. Access into these fires has been slowed by the harsh terrain but crews have begun to fight the fires swiftly. The Southern California Interagency Incident Management Team 1 is managing the fire.

?News:?Moderate surface fire spread was observed overnight.,?The Pacific Crest Trail is closed from Seiad Valley to Lilly Pad Lake.?

?Closures:?Going into or being upon any area, road or trail described below. (36 CFR 261.53(e)

CA-LNP Reading Fire. 27,777 acres. 32% contained.

News:??Minimal fire behavior was observed over night. There are thunderstorms in the area this morning.

Estimated Containment Date Tuesday August 21st, 2012 approx. 12:00 AM
?Note:?A Community Meeting will be held tonight, August 18, at 6:00 p.m. at the Old Station Volunteer Fire Department.
Summary:?Containment lines on the north and west side of the fire are complete. Emphasis today is on the south and east sides of the fire. Crews hiked in to the east side to take advantage of very early morning weather conditions and reduced fire activity to make progress controlling the fire. In addition, helicopters are being used on the south and east sides to extinguish hot spots and support crews on the ground.
?Air tankers were used to drop retardant on the eastern edge of the fire yesterday. This part of the fire contains spotty fuels, patches of timber, grass and brush. The use of retardant in this area will hasten the control of this fire and shorten the duration of firefighters exposure to smoke and physical injuries. Yesterday the airtankers dropped fugitive retardant. Fugitive retardants contain A coloring agent that is designed to fade rapidly following retardant application in order to minimize the visual impacts of the retardant. This type of retardant is effective in slowing the progress of the fire, but within several days is no longer visible on the ground. Retardant is just one of the many tools used by firefighters in containing this fire.
?Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) is a fire fighting philosophy of "do least damage." If a fire crew was fighting a fire in your back yard, you would want them to use MIST tactics. First, they would only suppress the fire in ways that would provide for your family's safety and their own. Then they would cut down only necessary trees, use water rather than chemicals when possible, communicate clearly with each other so they did not waste time or resources, use tools that were the right size rather than too big or too small, spend only the money they needed to spend, and restore the site as much as possible. Suppression of the Reading Fire is being done using MIST tactics.
?Smoke from other fires that are burning in northern California will also be present in the area. Due to smoke and firefighting equipment, driving in the area of the fire will be challenging today and over the weekend. Please be cautious when driving, watch for other vehicles, and drive slowly when visibility is low. Snag removal will continue today on the Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway.
Roads:?Visitors wanting to access Lassen National Volcanic Park from the north, can drive the Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway from the north entrance to Manzanita Lake. Visitors wanting to access the park from the south entrance, the road is open to Summit Lake. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead for current information.

Emory University: False academic data sent out

By Sevil Omer, NBC News

For more than a decade, Emory University intentionally misreported data about students to groups that rank colleges nationwide, the president of the?private liberal arts college in Atlanta said Friday.

?As an institution that challenges itself, in the words of our vision statement, to be ?ethically engaged,? Emory has not been well served by representatives of the university in this history of?misreporting. I am deeply disappointed,? said Emory President James W. Wagner in a statement on the university?s website.

Wagner said Emory officials launched an investigation in May after John Latting, the new assistance vice provost for undergraduate enrollment and dean of admissions, discovered discrepancies in data.

Wagner said SAT/ACT scores were overstated, as well as the class rankings. ?Specifically, he discovered that reported SAT/ ACT scores were those for admitted undergraduate students, not the requested scores for enrolled students, which were somewhat lower. A similar misrepresentation was discovered in data for our entering students? high school class rank,? according to a statement released by Emory.

The investigation also found that two former deans of admission and the leadership of the Office of Institutional Research were aware of the misreporting. They are no longer employed at Emory, according to Emory officials.

Emory is routinely listed as one of the nation's top colleges by national publications, such as U.S. News & World Report, Forbes and Peterson?s, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Families and students across the nation often rely on rankings when deciding where to apply for college. University officials say they do not know if the wrong data affected Emory?s rankings.

In 2011, U.S. News ranked Emory No. 20 among national public and private universities across the nation.

The university has about 13,300 students across Emory's nine divisions, including its graduate and professional schools, according to the?university's website.

Other universities have run into trouble recently over false or misleading data. Some of the cases:

  • In July, The University of Illinois College of Law was fined $250,000 by the American Bar Association for intentionally publishing false data about student academic standings, The Chicago Tribune reported.
  • In January,?Claremont McKenna College in California admitted sending false SAT scores to U.S. News & World Report and other publications, the New York Times reported.
  • In November, Iona College in New York said it had misrepresented data over a decade, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.
